Clinical observation of the intestinal obstruction

Abstract
An analysis of 131 cases of intestinal obstruction, of -which 116, cases were treated surgically, 15 cases nonsurgically, during the past 5 years from March 1966 to Jan. 1971 at Chungnam Medical Center was presented. The results obtained as follows.
1) The incidence of intestinal obstruction was 0.91%.
2) The cause of large intestinal obstruction was as follows in order of frequency; intussusception (24.4%), Post-operative adhesion (17.5%), Neoplastic stricture (15.3%), Volvulus(9.9%) and so on.
3) In age distribution, 42 cases(39.6%) were observed under, one year of age, showing the peak incidence, and the ratio of male to¢¥ female was 2:1.
4) The most common clinical symptoms were abdominal pain (78%), vomiting(67 %), abdominal distention(64%). Physical: examination revealed that more than 60% of all cases showed abdominal-distention (70%), or abdominal tenderness.
5) The positive sign in plain x-ray film of the abdomen was 83% and in barium enema 90%. Clinical symptoms and signs, leukocytosis 58.2%), increased hematocrit (46%) were also helpful for diagnosis.
6) Total mortality in our series was 12.9% and operative mortality was 6.9% in 131 cases. The common cause of death were post-operative shock (37.5%), peritonitis(25%), electrolyte imbalancc(25%) and cardiac arrest(12.5%).
